Phoenix, Daft Punk, Air, and Stromae are just a sampling of the amazing musical groups to come out of France over the past couple of decades, and joining their ranks are the breakout French duo Her. They’ve been on my radar since I discovered their first single, “Five Minutes”, on Spotify a couple of months ago. Since then, it’s been listened to over 300,000 times on SoundCloud, and is sure to be replayed a few hundred thousand times more following the release of their incredible debut EP, Her Tape #1, now on Spotify.
Hailing from Rennes in the northwest of France, Her has a distinctive, smooth sound that fits well into the indie pop genre while carving out a niche all its own. Their first EP contains four amazing singles, punctuated by a glitchy introduction and an instrumental interlude. The combination of sampled speeches, in both French and English, that characterizes the opening track perfectly sets the tone of the album; it’s kind of creepy, but intriguing, and leads seamlessly into the sexy second track, “Quite Like.”
** [there’s also a music video on YouTube, but it’s kind of racy so look it up on your own]
The sensual pop of “Quite Like” carries into the next track, “Five Minutes”, which takes the deep, dark sound to new levels. The minimalistic but catchy grooves are a staple of the album, providing the back drop for the title track and the spoken word of the final song, “Union”. Overall, it’s an incredible debut album, and I absolutely cannot wait for Her to announce a North American tour.
